My Quilts - mid-70s to 1979

My First Quilt
mid 1970s
My first quilt project was awful! I thought I was the only quilter on the West Coast. I was doing it all by hand and the points still didn't meet. The quilt design was pounced on with baby powder. The fabric was a polyester-blend and the polyester batt bearded through the dark blue fabric beautifully. The back was navy blue and the white uneven stitches still make me wince when I see them. But I continued.

Someone gave me some beautiful fancy jeans pocket samples and I made this quilt for my step-daughter, Meghan. I rescued an old pair of jeans covered with star-shaped studs which I removed and reapplied in the shape of the Big and Little Dipper constellations. Red yarn at the corner of each block hold the quilt together.

The Thursday Quilters (I found a quilt group!) told me I could't use denim in a real quilt so I had to use denim in my next quilt. I combined denim and polyester this time. The stitches were so much better, I was quite proud of my finished project.
